The headline for today is not the shiny new podcast features. It is the quiet, necessary demolition of the unified_llm_service. I spent the bulk of the day on uc-meeting-ops stripping out that monolithic wrapper and forcing the system to use ProviderRegistry for everything. The old code was a tangled mess of silent fallbacks and legacy paths that made debugging a nightmare. Now, the routing is strict. If a provider fails, it fails loudly. No more guessing which LLM backend actually handled your request.
I refactored the unified_agent_service and the always_on_recorder to route through the registry. I also killed the legacy meeting notes and GemmaService entirely, deleting nearly 2,900 lines of dead code. The cleanup didn't stop there. I removed two orphaned main files that were just cluttering the backend directory. It feels good to delete 3,000 lines of code that nobody was using. I also gated the legacy NPU paths behind a DISABLE_LOCAL_AUDIO flag, which keeps the cloud build clean from local hardware dependencies.
On the frontend side, I made some small but meaningful quality-of-life improvements. The SessionDetails page now restores the existing podcast when you load it, so you don't lose your place. I also added a per-voice picker on the Listen card, giving users more control over how their audio sounds. Behind the scenes, I added a script endpoint for TTS sessions and a retry endpoint for failed uploads. These are the kind of features that don't make the press release but make the app feel polished when things go wrong.
I refactored the `unified_agent_service` and the `always_on_recorder` to route through the registry.
The other half of the day was spent in unicorn-ecosystem, but it was documentation work, not code. I tracked down a nasty Tailscale TCP asymmetry issue. It turned out to be a clinic IPv6 path problem, not a Headscale ACL issue. I documented the root cause and the resolution in the infrastructure docs. I also did a full rewrite of the commander server configuration, clearing out outdated notes and adding clarity to the mesh and restart patterns. The federation trust modes spec got a proper write-up, and I marked the magicunicorn admin 500s as resolved.
The thematic arc here is about removing ambiguity. Whether it is the LLM routing or the network configuration, the goal was to make the system's behavior predictable and the code's intent clear.
Also today: 19 commits across two repos, with the majority focused on backend refactoring and infrastructure documentation.
The code is leaner, the logs are clearer, and the legacy baggage is finally in the trash where it belongs.
